Write about “The Necklace” through a Marxist lens using at least three quotes from the text. The quotes should “look like this and be in MLA format” (Maupassant Page #). A Works Cited is not required for this assignment.
Questions a Marxist critic would ask (you do not have to answer all of the questions):
What social classes are presented in the text? How are they portrayed?
How would the text have been different if the social classes of the characters were flipped?
What values related to class does the text reinforce or subvert?
How do characters of different classes interact or conflict?
How did Madame Loisel’s perspective and attitude about class / social status change over the ten years she spent repaying her debt?
The “Necklace” has many parallels with modern American life. In approximately two paragraphs and pointing to specific parts of the story, compare an example from a scene in “The Necklace” to something from either your own life, a friend, family member, or pop culture (movies, television, books, etc.).
